LIONS FACTS Melvin Jones, founder of Lions clubs, held the first meeting in Chicago on June 7, 1917. The Lions club is the largest service club in the world with 1,379,000 members worldwide. The Lions club is represented in 190 countries and geographical areas around the world. The Lions Sight First program has as its gosl to eliminate preventable, curable causes of blindness. The Association of Lions Clubs became "International" in the year 1920 when the Windsor, Ontario, Canada Lions Club joined our organization. ********************************************************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE Our organization seeks service minded individuals willing to serve their community without personal financial reward, who will dedicate themselves to encouraging efficiency and promoting high ethical standards in commerce, industry, profession, public service and private endeavors. Any person of legal age, good moral character, and of good reputation in the community may be granted membership. ********************************************************************************************************************** WHAT DO LIONS DO? Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need wherever need exists. The Association was founded in 1917 and in 1925 Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their annual International Convention, challenging them to become "Knights of the Blind in the Crusade Against Darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities. In addition, Lions take part in service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research; work with the mentally and physically impaired; community welfare; youth programs and many other projects. ********************************************************************************************************************** ALACHUA LIONS CLUB The first Alachua Lions club was chartered in February 26, 1931 with 21 members. The club met at noon at Fugates Cafe on Main Street. Sponsoring the local Boy Scout Troop was one of their first projects. In the late 1930s the club became inactive and was re-chartered on January 19, 1940. We met at the Cook Hotel for a few months and then moved to the old log cabin. The meeting time was changed to 7:00 p.m. each Thursday, as it remains today. The first acitivity started by the new club was the Cattlemen's Banquet. The objective was to raise money for their service projects and to promote the cattle industry in this area. In March 2003 the club sponsored the 64th Cattlemen's Banquet which is the longest ongoing Lions Project in the state of Florida. For many years the club operated the Newmansville Cemetery which was split off as a seperate corporation in the early 1980s. The club provides members for two seats on the Board of Directors of that corp. The Lions motto "WE SERVE" is very much a way of life for the Alachua Lions Club. ********************************************************************************************************************** The club members are: Dr. Doug Adel DDS, Dr. Al Berry, Rack Bingham Jr., Ben Boukari, Bryan Boukari, Tom Boyd, Jim Brandenburg, Steve Cade, Gene Carter, Dr. Marc Cauchon, Ralph Cellon, Linda Chapman, Gib Coerper, Robert Coile, Mary Crane, Bob Crane Jr., Alex Cruickshanks III, Scott Dansby, Jim Emerson, Austin Green, Nat Hadsock, Gary Hardacre, Ava Hagan, Tommy Harris, James Harrison, Orien Hills, Dr. Cris Hirsch, Gunter Hirsch PDG, Alan Hitchcock, Lloyd Huggins, Lewis Irby, Bill Irby, Karl Kaswinkel, Craig Kirk, Wendell Lewis, Ron McComas, Martin Meder, Don Olliff, Marion Pettit, James Petty, John Semrau, Jerry Smith, Senator Rod Smith, Pepe Tomeu, Dick Tudor, Clovis Watson Jr., Ed Willard, Ted Wilson, Warren Woolsey PDG, Kay Yoho.
